If you have purchased eyeglasses from any of Columbia Eye Clinic’s Optical Shops, then David Rogers, our Lead Lab Technician, has touched your order. David is a Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO) and works behind the scenes in our optical finishing lab at the Downtown Columbia location fulfilling 20-30 pairs of glasses each day for all three Optical Shop locations.
David places orders to lens manufacturers, edges lenses when they come in from the lab, and places them in the frame based on each patient’s custom measurements of where the frame sits on their face and the shape of the frame. The bucks stops with David when it comes to our one year guarantee on all workmanship. He personally inspects all optical orders before they go out to patients.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
David: My passion is using my 30 years of experience—I’ve been working in the optical field since I was 19 years old—to create custom eyeglasses to help patients see—and look—their best. I love to provide superior workmanship and one of a kind, high quality products that no one else offers. I’m proud that Columbia Eye Clinic still offers fully custom optical products.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
David: Although my work is mostly done behind the scenes, I love to interact with patients and meet or exceed their expectations. My job is to take care of patients, no matter what their prescription or visual needs. The opticians know that my answer to “Can we do this?” is always, “Yes!”
What would you say is unique about Columbia Eye Clinic?
David: I have been with Columbia Eye Clinic for going on five years, but wish I had found my work home sooner. The doctors appreciate and take good care of the staff and still offer pension, paid leave, holiday gifts and a holiday party.
Tell us about yourself…what do you like to do outside of work?
David: I’m from Greenville and am a family man—in fact, my daughter also works at Columbia Eye Clinic. My wife and I also have a son, eight dogs, four chickens, one cat and two birds (by the way, I hate birds)—but who’s counting? When I’m not taking care of Columbia Eye Clinic patients or my menagerie of animals, my family enjoys RVing and exploring state parks. Our favorite area to camp is the Apalachicola area in the Florida panhandle.
